Tips for Choosing Your Homeschool Curriculum

  • Pray, pray, pray. God will grant you wisdom as you seek Him (James 1:5).

  • Write down your reasons for homeschooling. Your ‘why’ to home educate and disciple your children will help guide you in your decisions.

  • Consider your goals both short term and long term (big picture) for your family and each of your children. What are the most important things you want your children to learn – academically, socially, and spiritually? How do you envision success?

  • Think about you, the teacher, and your family. Do you prefer structure or flexibility? How would you describe your family lifestyle? Would you be teaching one child or multiple ages? How much time can you devote to teaching as well as preparing lessons? Are you a military family? Do you have a home business? Will you be working – part time/full time? Do you run a own home business?

  • Don’t forget your finances. Private home education has costs, but cost does not necessarily equate to quality. If you prepare your own lessons or search the Internet for less expensive or free products, you may save money but at the expense of time. On the other hand, there is a higher cost to purchase materials that are all laid out for you.

  • Some final thoughts
    • God knows you; and He knows your children. In His sovereign providence, He has chosen you to raise and train your children for His glory. He is with you! (Hebrews 13:5)
    • Focus on character and not just the academics. Set your sights on things eternal. (Colossians 3:2)
    • One size does not fit all. A curriculum may work for your best friend’s family but not be a good fit for you.
    • A perfect curriculum does not exist. Curricula are just tools to accomplish your goals.
    • Be flexible. If a curriculum isn’t working, give it some time and make some adjustments. Seek the Lord for wisdom. Maybe it’s time for a change; and that is ok!
    • If you’re not sure what to curriculum to use, continue to bring your need before the Lord and then just read, study, and memorize God’s Word. You can’t lose!
